Our History

Since 1996, Maternal Life International (MLI) of Butte, Montana, USA, has been developing programs to promote “Safe Motherhood” for women in Africa, Mexico and elsewhere.  MLI’s initial efforts included creating training courses in emergency obstetrical care in Ghana and Cameroon, both in Africa, and helping to construct two maternal health centers in geographically isolated areas of Cameroon.

In the course of MLI’s work, the link between caring for women and mothers and preventing the spread of HIV became increasingly apparent. As a result, for the past eight years MLI has developed a comprehensive strategy to address the connection among HIV avoidance, improved obstetrical care, and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of AIDS.  MLI now provides training and resource assistance through three program models:

  • “A New Robe” parish nursing program trains nurses to provide AIDS prevention and care through a parish or church base.  These nurses not only provide symptom-based medications and prophylactic antibiotics, but they also coordinate home-based care with spiritual and emotional support.  The New Robe model in Swaziland has been recognized both by the United Nations as pioneering a successful model of a faith-help partnership and by Yale University Medical School as making significant contributions to society and poverty alleviation.
  •  “Circles of Life” integrates instruction in AIDS prevention with education both in fertility awareness and the importance of breast feeding infants to prevent mother-to-child transmission of AIDS. Emphasis also is placed on a shared foundation in the human capacity for faithful, chaste, and self-giving love. “Circles of Life” is consistent with emerging data from Africa that demonstrate stabilization and even decrease in HIV prevalence rates through abstinence and behavioral change.
  • “Safe Passages” provides training in emergency obstetrics and integrates the treatment of HIV positive pregnant women into the core of obstetrical care.  “Safe Passages” is a concrete response to the World Health Organization’s call to decrease maternal mortality by 50 percent and to provide practical means of preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission.

MLI programs are active in six African countries: Cameroon, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Swaziland, and Uganda.  Our patented “bead system” of fertility awareness has also found its way to Nepal, Mexico, the Ukraine, and even to the United States.  In all of these places, we are shifting the paradigm and reestablishing the human dimension in medicine by demonstrating that health care development is best founded on a holistic approach that brings together good clinical training, appropriate technologies, and practical ethics.
