Our History
Since 1996, Maternal Life International (MLI) of Butte, Montana, USA, has been developing programs to promote “Safe Motherhood” for women in Africa, Mexico and elsewhere. MLI’s initial efforts included creating training courses in emergency obstetrical care in Ghana and Cameroon, both in Africa, and helping to construct two maternal health centers in geographically isolated areas of Cameroon. In the course of MLI’s work, the link between caring for women and mothers and preventing the spread of HIV became increasingly apparent. As a result, for the past eight years MLI has developed a comprehensive strategy to address the connection among HIV avoidance, improved obstetrical care, and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of AIDS. MLI now provides training and resource assistance through three program models:
MLI programs are active in six African countries: Cameroon, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Swaziland, and Uganda. Our patented “bead system” of fertility awareness has also found its way to Nepal, Mexico, the Ukraine, and even to the United States. In all of these places, we are shifting the paradigm and reestablishing the human dimension in medicine by demonstrating that health care development is best founded on a holistic approach that brings together good clinical training, appropriate technologies, and practical ethics. |
