Malawi:
The FAMLI program is expanding from the Lilongwe Diocese south to
the Mtendere Diocese. The expansion of the program was
supported by a January 2004 grant from Catholic Relief Services of
Baltimore. The FAMLI model – with
“Youth Alive,” “Circles of Life,” and “AIDS Cultural
Change” -- is making its way across Malawi. A March 2004 grant
from Medical Services Corporation through the United States Aid for
International Development (USAID) will expand the program further.
- Nigeria: We have distributed to every hospital within the Christian
Health Association of Nigeria (CHAN) the first two quarterly issues of
our "Safe Passages Bulletin," helping to promote safe
births by providing ongoing information and training on emergency
obstetrical medical procedures. Maternal Life and its partners
will continue
to advocate for “safe birth” in Nigeria, and the Safe Passages
Bulletin is one way to do this.
- Our
April 2004 South Africa trip involved:
- Presenting
the Safe Passages Program at St. Mary’s Hospital in Durban. MLI received an $8,000 grant from CMMB for this program.
- Discussing
the development of an African Parish Nurse Training Center with the
administration and nursing school faculty at St. Mary’s Hospital,
other private voluntary organizations, and with Mrs. Thandiwe Dlamini
and the leadership of the Swaziland Parish Nurse Program.
- Presenting
“The Biology and Methodology of the Bead System of Fertility
Awareness” at the academic sessions of the African Family Life
Federation (AFLF) meeting in Johannesburg.
- Conducting
a five-day training workshop in the Circles of Life program for
representatives from all over Africa as part of the AFLF meeting.
- Networking
with health care and pastoral leaders from all over the African
continent in order to exchange ideas and discuss the necessary next
steps for program development and implementation regarding natural
family planning tools and youth abstinence programs to stem the HIV/AIDS
crisis.
- Maternal
Life: We have perfected our preliminary patent for our Peak
and Bead Method of Fertility Awareness, and the U.S. Patent Office published our patent in late August.
